ABSTRACT

This research was carried out on the growth performance of Clarias gariepinus fed dietary chitosan. The growth parameters (length and weight), condition factor, feed and carcass analysis were also investigated. The Crab waste was collected from Kpesu market in Warri Delta State; Shrimp exoskeleton was collected from the Victoria Island fish market while the Prawn were collected from the Ogun river along the Kara market Ijodu Berger both in Lagos State Nigeria. The Water quality parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and free carbondioxide (CO2) was monitored and recorded on weekly basis. The mean value of Iron in Chitosan was highest (35.83mg/kg) in D2 and lowest in D1; Zinc had the highest value (127.37mg/kg) in D3 and lowest (48.18mg/kg) in D2; Potassium had highest value (18111.33mg/kg) in D2 and lowest value (16082.33mg/kg) in D3; Phosphorous had the highest value (691.33mg/kg) in D3 while the lowest (578.88mg/kg) was in D2; The value were significantly different (P<0.05) in all the treatments. The percentage crude protein had highest value (30.30%) while the lowest (28.01%) was in D2; Crude fat had highest value (1.64%) in D4 while lowest (1.11%) was in D3; Ash content had highest (19.44%) D3 and lowest 18.21% in D2; Carbohydrate had highest (40.59%) in D1 and lowest (38.56%) in D2. There were significant difference among the treatments. The concentration of mineral in the experimental diet showed Iron had the highest in D3 (403.29g/kg) and lowest in D4(285.84g/kg); Zinc had highest in D2 (145.62) and lowest in D1 (56.07); Potassium had highest in D3 (7302.26) and lowest in D1 (5903.63); Calcium had highest in D2 (50485.98) while lowest in D1(40741.93); Phosphorous had highest value in D3 (2708.23) while the lowest in D1 (1020.36); The highest mean length xv value (29.80cm) in D3 at the 16th week while the least value (10.17cm) in D4 at week 0. The highest weight was recorded in D3 (117.67g) while D1(57.67g) had the lowest; there was significant difference (P<0.05) across the treatments. The mean food consumption ratio had highest in D3 (56.80) while the lowest in D4 (52.41); The comparison of mean in Feed Conversion Ratio had highest in D1 (1.73) and lowest in D3 (1.23); Specific Growth Rate had highest in D3 (10.16) and lowest in D1 (6.86); there was significant difference (P<0.05) across the treatments. The mean condition factor showed no significant differences (P>0.05) across the treatments at the end of the experiment. However, D3 (1.01) had the highest value and the lowest in D2 (0.91); The mineral analysis of Carcass showed there was significant difference (P<0.05) across the treatments. The water quality parameters showed that Dissolved Oxygen (DO) ranged from 3.00 to 4.40 in D3 and D2 respectively; Ammonia and Nitrate had same value of 0.50 and 0.60 for all the treatments with exception of D1 with 0.35 and 0.66 respectively. Nitrite and pH values were same for all the treatments. Temperature differed slightly in all the treatments.
