EFFECT OF CULTISM AND OTHER SOCIAL VICES ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF EDO STATE POLYTECHNIC, USEN)

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effect of cultism and other social vices on the academic achievement of Polytechnic students in Nigeria, using Edo State Polytechnic, Usen as a reference point. The objective of the study are to seek practical solutions to the problem of cultism in Polytechnic, to plant the seeds of ethical values in the fertile minds of students as important ingredient for enduring political, social and economic progress, to renew faith in Educational institutions as places where basic values are communicated, to promote the ethics, integrity and credibility of Polytechnics in Nigeria. For the purpose of this research work, the sample size drawn out of the population is made up of 90 males and 60 female students which in total sum up to be 150. The students in the sample have studied for at least two years in the polytechnic and have gotten information about Polytechnic. The study recommended that Emphasis should be placed on moral instructions and value re-orientation in our institutions to combat cultism, student should be taught the virtues of hard work, honesty and the dignity of labour and guidance and counseling services should be adopted in institutions so as to reduce cases of cultism.
