ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to determine “Effect of covid-19 outbreak on the Englishperformance of secondary school students in Egor local government area.Three research questions was raised while research question 2 was hypothized.
The population of study comprises of five thousand four hundred and eighty eight (5488) public senior secondary school students both male and female in egor local government area of edo state ,the sample comprises 100 students selected from. four secondary schools in egor local government area. the four randomly selected schools are: The findings of the study were as follows.The average English grade of secondary school students in the area declined by 15% during the 2020/2021 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students in Egor Local Government Area who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant decrease in their reading comprehension skills. Students in Egor Local Government Area who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic showed a shift from spoken to written language, as they had limited opportunities for face-to-face communication and oral interactions.
Based on the findings the following were recommended.There should be a comprehensive assessment of the impact of COVID-19 on students' learning outcomes, including their English performance, to identify the most affected areas and inform targeted interventions.There should be a provision of online resources and educational materials to support students' learning and improvement in English, particularly for those who have limited access to educational facilities and resources. There should be a focus on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in English language instruction, as these skills are essential for students to navigate the challenges posed by the pandemic and adapt to new situations.
