ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effect of copper pollution on the efficiency of activated sludge systems in removing phosphorus from wastewater. The specific objectives include examining physiochemical parameters of wastewater with copper solution and raw wastewater variation after 24 and 48 hours, as well as assessing the impact of copper pollution on phosphorus removal efficiency in activated sludge systems. Samples was collected from University of Benin (Hall 2) effluent stream. Findings reveals dynamic changes in physiochemical parameters over time, indicating potential influences of copper pollution and natural processes on wastewater characteristics. The results indicate a significant decrease in phosphorus concentration in samples exposed to copper for 24 and 48 hours, suggesting improved phosphorus removal efficiency. Research recommends that, conducting additional studies to understand copper-mediated phosphorus removal mechanisms, optimizing treatment strategies, implementing monitoring programs, exploring alternative technologies, and increasing stakeholder awareness of responsible copper management practices.
