ABSTRACT

The effects of cadmium and zinc ions on growth of Capsicum annum L. were studied in in vitro and potted field experiments. Petri-dishes were used for the in vitro experiment. Concentrations of chemical treatments tested were 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350 and 400 ppm. Parameters recorded for in vitro experiment were germination, radicle and plumule length and for field experiment were germination, plant height, number of leaves, stem girth, fresh and dry weights. Germination of seeds in the in vitro experiment did not clearly indicate the effects of the metal treatments (Cd and Zn). Under Cd treatments, seeds produced radicles. Plumules were not observed for seeds given Cd treatments greater than 150 ppm. Seeds produced radicle and plumule under Zn treatments. Plumule formation was delayed in Capsicum annum, seeds began germination in soil treated with Zn and Cd individually, seven days after planting. Plant height and number of leaves per plant were affected by Cd in soil. Zn did not affect plant height and number of  leaves per plant.
