ABSTRACT
Pisidium guajava (staph) commonly called guava belongs to the family Myrtaceae. It grows in tropic areas. Ficus sur forssk (staph) commonly called wild fig, bush fig, cape fig, broom-cluster fig belongs to the family of Moraceae. This species is widely distributed from North Africa to Western Cape in South Africa. It is usually found on riverbanks or in riverine forest but can also be found in drier woodlands. It is restricted to frost-free areas with moderate rainfall. The leaves of Pisidium guajava and Ficus sur forssk were collected in May 2023 from Ovah village and University of Benin respectively both in Ovia North East L.G.A, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. This research was aimed at studying the anti-inflammatory activity of the methanol extract of biherbal formulation of Pisidium guajava and Ficus sur forssk staph. Acute toxicity test was carried out using standard procedures. Acute inflammatory study was carried out using carrageenan and egg albumin induced inflammations in rats, while sub-acute inflammation study was carried out using formaldehyde induced inflammation in the paw of rats. Results obtained from the acute toxicity study revealed the LD50 was greater than 1000mg/kg. The antiinflammatory study revealed that plant extract exhibited significant decreases in carrageenan, egg albumin and formaldehyde induced paw inflammation indicating anti-inflammatory activity of the extract at dosage concentration of 30 and 300mg/kg. It is concluded from this research that the methanol extract of bi-herbal formulation of Pisidium guajava and Ficus sur forssk staph is effective in management of acute and chronic inflammations.
