EFFECT OF ASPARTAME ON PLASMA VISCOSITY AND FIBRINOGEN IN FEMALE SPRAGUE DAWLEY RATS

ABSTRACT

Aspartame, a commonly used low-calorie sweetener, has been subject to conflicting reports regarding its safety profile, with potential associations with various diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular conditions. This study seeks to investigate the impact of aspartame on specific cardiovascular indicators. To conduct this research, a total of Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing between 200g-220g were employed. The rats were divided into four groups for the experiment: Control Group did not receive any medications. Group 1 (Low dose)) received 50mg/kg of aspartame in 5 ml of water, Group 2 (Medium dose) received 75mg/kg of aspartame in 5ml of water, Group 3 (High dose) received 100mg/kg of aspartame in 5ml of water. The various doses of aspartame were administered orally on a daily basis for a duration of twelve weeks. The weights of the rats were recorded weekly, and at the end of the experimental period, the rats were euthanized, and blood samples were collected in plain sample bottles. The study focused on analyzing fibrinogen levels, and plasma viscosity. The study findings indicated that aspartame induced a significant increase in fibrinogen for the 75mg/kg group (p ≤ 0.005) and for the 100mg/kg (p ≤ 0.001) compared with control. Furthermore, a significant difference was also noticed in plasma viscosity (p ≤ 0.05). In summary, the consumption of aspartame appears to have adverse effects on various cardiovascular hemodynamic factors. Consequently, it is advisable to adhere to recommended acceptable daily intake.
