ABSTRACT
Hunteria umbellata is a medicinal plant, found in Nigeria, Ghana and other parts of Africa, which can be applied in the treatment of various ailments. Biochemical and histological analysis were conducted to determine the effect of aqueous-methanolic seed extract of Hunteria umbellata on the liver function enzymes of Dibutyl Phthlate (DBP)-Induced toxicity in male Wistar rats. Thirty five wistar rats weighing 238.80 ± 4.71 g were divided into five groups of seven rats each. They were fed with rat chow for 28 days along with water ad libitum. Biochemical parameters of liver function determined include Alanine transaminase (ALT), Aspartate transaminase (AST), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Change in weight and relative liver weight was also determined. Results showed significant decrease in body weight when compared with the control. Histopathological results showed severe zonal necrosis and periportal infiltration of inflammatory cells in the liver, due to the toxicity of DBP, and a reduction in the severity in zonal necrosis and inflammatory cells in the group with the highest dose of H. umbellata. Results showed a significant increase in ALT and AST activities in the groups treated with H. umbellata. These results indicate that DBP caused severe damage to the liver, and treatment with Hunteria umbellata did not effectively ameliorate these effects.
