ABSTRACT

This research was aimed at determining the nephro-protective properties of aqueous leaf extract of Acalypha wilkesiana plant on PHZ induced anaemia in male albino rats. A total of thirty (30) adult male albino rats weighting approximately 200-230 grams were used for the experiment. These were divided into 6 groups; Group 1: Control group, Group 2: Positive Control group (Vit E), Group 3: Negative Control group, Group 4: 200mg aqueous extract of Acalypha wilkesiana , Group 5: 400mg aqueous extract of Acalypha wilkesiana. Results indicated that the kidney function test of various group with group 2 (positive control) having a higher urea and creatinine concentration than the control group. Group 3, 4, 5, 6 has both urea and creatinine (negative control) has a lower concentration than the control group. Bicarbonate results shows all group having a lower concentration than the control group. Results indicated nephro-protective properties of aqueous leaf extract of Acalypha wilkesiana plant on PHZ induced anaemia as kidney function tests have shown positive turning effects on groups administered, this aqueous extract as compared to control groups.
