ABSTRACT
The liver is one of the most important organs, controlling critical biochemical and physiological activities such as homeostasis, growth, energy provision, reproduction, detoxification, fight against infections and nutrient supply in the body. Hence, its malfunction or damage is usually associated with serious consequences which sometimes lead to terminal illness. In spite of tremendous scientific advancement in the field of hepatology in recent years, liver problems are on the rise. Presently, a few hepatoprotective drugs are available for the treatment of liver disorders. Hence, the search for a hepatoprotective drug becomes imperative. This study investigated the effects of the aqueous extracts of Sphenocentrum jollyanum stem on liver status. Liver enzymes levels (ALT, AST, ALP) were evaluated. Blood samples were collected from experimental animals used in the study and biochemical indices where assayed for. The result obtained from this study showed that the aqueous extract of Sphenocentrum jollyanum stem has the potential to significantly increase liver enzymes/status. In the liver function test, there was significant changes in AST, ALP, & ALT levels in the extract treated animals. The result therefore suggests that the extract was not potentially safe for oral consumption.
