ABSTRACT

High blood sugar levels are the hallmark of diabetes, a chronic metabolic disease with numerous etiologies. Diabetes management is viewed as a widespread issue, and a cure is still undiscovered. Annona muricata bark, root, and leaves have apparently all been utilized locally as antidiabetic agents. This investigation looked at how Annona muricata leaf extract affected glucose levels and pro-inflammatory markers in Wistar rats that had developed diabetes as a result of STZ treatment. The study's findings revealed a substantial (p<0.05) fold rise in blood sugar, IL-1β, NF-kappa-b, and TNF-α in the diabetes control group compared to the normal control group. However, treatment of the common medication metformin and A. muricata leaf extract at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight mitigated the harmful effects of STZ in a dose-dependent manner.

The results support the use of this plant in the treatment of diabetes to some extent because it showed anti-diabetic and pro-inflammatory effects against STZ-induced diabetic Wistar rats.
