EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGES OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH HEARING AND VISUAL IMPAIRMENT IN BENIN METROPOLIS

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the educational challenges of secondary school student with hearing, five (5) research questions were raised. The study was delimited to Secondary school students with hearing and visual impairment. The design for the study was descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was 50. The sample for the study was 50 secondary school student with hearing and visual impairment. The instrument for the study was a well-structured questionnaire. The instrument was validated by the researcher supervisor and two other experts in the department of Educational Evaluation and Counseling Psychology. The internal consistency of the instrument was established by administering 20 copies of the instrument to students who are not part of the sample. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency count, simple percentages, mean and standard deviation. Findings from the study revealed that there are lack of teaching facilities, no special classroom design for hearing and visual purpose, school environment is not conducive for learning. Further, it revealed that school authorities do not support for the provision of textbooks, no provision of laboratory equipment, no good counselling from school authorities to students, and lack of modern teaching facilities. The findings indicate that attitudes towards inclusive education differ between male and female teachers.
