ABSTRACT

This research work delved into the economic development of Precolonial Sagamu, exploring various aspects of the town’s economic activities and their contribution to the overall development of the community. The study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the economic landscape of Sagamu before the arrival of colonial powers, with a focus on agriculture, indigenous industries, and trade. The findings of this study shed light on the vibrant economic activities that shaped the socio-economic structure of Sagamu.

   The need for this study flowed from the indentifiable gaps in existing literature sources. They were reviewed to provide a theoretical framework for this research. The study initiated with an exploration of the background of Sagamu, setting a foundational understanding of the regions historical and geographical context. The objectives aimed to uncover the multifaceted dimensions of economic development in precolonial Sagamu, focusing on agricultural and industrial growth, as well as trade. The methodology combined historical analysis with ethnographic insights, ensuring a thorough investigation of the existing literature, which revealed significant gaps in the understanding of Sagamu's economic history.

The second chapter delved into the historical origin of Sagamu people, providing insights into the geography, climate, traditions of origin, settlement patterns, political organization and social organization of the community. This chapter laid the foundation for understanding the cultural and historical context in which the economic activities of Sagamu evolved. The historical origins of Sagamu are rooted in complex migratory patterns and socio-political dynamics within the Yoruba region. The traditions of origin provided insight into the mythological and cultural narratives that shaped the identity and cohesion of the Sagamu people. These traditions are it just stories but reflect the collective memory and historical consciousness of the people, helping to forge a strong communal identity. Settlement patterns reflected strategic choices for optimizing agricultural productivity and trade connectivity. Villages were often established near fertile lands and water sources, ensuring sustainable agricultural practices. The political organization showcased a sophisticated governance system that facilitated economic activities, while the social organization demonstrated a community-oriented approach that was essential for collective prosperity. The hierarchical structure, with it's various levels of chieftaincy and council systems, played a critical role in maintaining order and promoting economic development.
