ABSTRACT
Thus far, it has been established that the economic arrangement of the British served both economic and political purposes, and this thereby contributed to the colonization and consolidation of British rule in Nigeria especially in Benin kingdom at that time, colonization in this context was another major feature of the economic history of this region (Benin). This economic interest of the European at first were mainly trade in human and also in few goods like pepper, ivory among other in the late 15th century and early 16th century, with this it could be seen at first that the relationship that existed between the European and the people of Benin was cordial, in the sense that they respected the territories of the Benin people, thereby not intruding on their land and just engagingin trade with them.
