ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to examine the challenges and prospect of embracing e-government/e-governance initiative for effective administration, using Oredo local government secretariat as a case study. The study employs the survey design, which enables the researcher to choose from studies population samples for intensive study and analysis. The research was conducted using the random sampling method of data collection. The targeted population of the study is from members of staff below the top management level in Oredo Local Government Secretariat. The researcher randomly selects 100 employees and Out of the 100 questionnaires that were administered only 76 were carefully completed and returned. The data collected were analyzed in percentage and all data collected was arranged in tabular form. The study reveals that e-governance/e-government holds immense promise as a prospect for effective administration in the public sector in Nigeria. It has the potentials to enhance administrative efficiency by reducing paperwork, facilitating the delivery of public services, promotes transparency, accountability and, also encourages citizen engagement in government operations. However, Nigeria faces unique challenges on the part to effective e-government/e-governance implementation. The inadequate infrastructures and poor internet in Nigeria have hindered the implementation of e-governance in the country. Despite these challenges, Nigeria stands at the threshold of a transformative era in public administration, where egovernance and e-government can contribute significantly to the country development and governance effectiveness.
