DOSE-DEPEDENCE OF DIHYDROARTEMISININ- PIPERAQUINE INDUCTION

ABSTRACT

Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine is a therapeutic drug use for malaria chemotherapy which is use in almost all part of the world. In Nigeria, the use of these drug in treatment of malaria is on the rise and a study of some adverse effects of this drug in inducing cancer markers at different doses has not been sufficiently evaluated. The aim of this study was to assay for possible cancer markers induction after exposure to dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine in albino rats. The study participant were 18 test groups both male and female and 18 control group both male and female. The level of serum cancer antigen 125(CA 125), cancer antigen 15-3(CA 15-3) and prostrate specific antigen(PSA) were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). Data were analyzed and compared between the various group and the control using the appropraite statistical tool. The level of serum cancer antigen 125(CA 125), cancer antigen 15-3(CA 15-3) and prostrate specific antigen(PSA) were significantly lower at p>0.005 among the different dose after induction of the dihdroartermisinin-piperaquine. There was no cancer induction after exposure to dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine for 28 days. Therefore the use of this drug has little or no risk in cancer induction and safe for use as treatment of malaria and other therapeutic uses.
