ABSTRACT
Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure of the circulating blood against the walls of the blood vessels and it fluctuates due to many internal and external factors. It has been reported that significant diurnal differences were found in some hematological indices in young adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the diurnal variations in blood pressure and blood cellular components in young adults. Thirty (30) subjects were recruited for this study (between ages 19 – 25). Diurnal blood pressures were monitored together with blood samples taken serially from same subjects in the Morning (7AM -8AM), Afternoon (1PM – 2PM) and Evening (7PM – 8PM). The BP was measured using Omron Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor while the blood samples were analyzed with standard methods. The results showed significant increase in BP parameters (systolic and diastolic BP, MAP) in the evening compared to morning and blood cellular components especially in the afternoon and evening compared to morning. In conclusion, Blood Pressures as well as total white blood cells rises significantly during the day and peak in the evening while they are at their lowest points at nights. Red blood cells and platelets exhibited no diurnal variation. The predictive values of blood pressures using White blood cells and haematocrit were equally demonstrated in this study.
