ABSTRACT

Allergic Conjunctivitis an ocular disease often triggered by airborne allergens, and is characterized by acute, intermittent, or chronic inflammation. This condition, frequently accompanied by meibomian gland dysfunction, has seen a rise in prevalence, particularly among diverse populations, prompting numerous research endeavors to explore its causes, prevalence, and management. This study aimed to ascertain the prevalence of Allergic Conjunctivitis and Meibomian gland dysfunction among students at the University of Benin, Edo State. Employing a prospective observational approach, 150 students aged 18-32, encompassing both genders, were sampled. Through a structured questionnaire and examination using Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy, variables such as meibomian gland expression, tear break-up time, papillary reaction grading, and tear production were assessed. Data analysis, conducted with SPSS software version 22.0, involved grouping data by age ranges for interpretation. Out of 110 examined students (51.8% females, 48.2% males), findings indicated a notable prevalence of Allergic Conjunctivitis and Meibomian gland dysfunction, particularly among individuals who reported eye rubbing and itchy eyes. Furthermore, the study corroborated the alternative hypothesis, suggesting an association between Allergic Conjunctivitis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (P>0.01). In conclusion, the study underscores the prevalence of Allergic Conjunctivitis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction among students in this region, emphasizing the imperative of education and awareness campaigns among students and the adoption of pharmacological and non-pharmacological relief methods.
