ABSTRACT

As social media has become a new way to talk to people, it has led to a new way of talking. This study is mostly about how people in Nigeria use social media to talk to each other. The goal of this study is to show in detail how discourse markers are used to keep and control the flow of communication on social media.

Several linguists, such as Deborah Schiffrin (1994), Fraser Bruce (2009), Lenk (1998), etc., came up with the theories that are used here. These theories are called "relevance theory," "adaptation theory," and "coherence theory."

Several things were found when this work was looked at in detail. From the data that was collected, it was found that some of the words came from Nigerian languages like Yoruba, Igbo, and Bini. Also, some of these words fit into more than one category, and the words showed how they control and keep conversations going on social media.
