DIMINUTIVE AND AUGMENTATIVE IN EBIRA

ABSTRACT

This study delves into the realm of evaluative morphology within the Ebira dialect, a member of the Niger-Congo language family. The focus lies on the exploration of diminutive and augmentative expressions, investigating how these linguistic tools convey notions of size and emotional nuances, reflecting approval or disapproval. The objective of the research is to intricately describe the internal structure and semantic intricacies of diminutive and augmentative forms in Ebira, revealing how these elements are employed by speakers to communicate sentiments of affection, emphasis, and cultural values. Employing qualitative research methods, both primary and secondary sources are utilized to uncover the distinctive characteristics of evaluative morphology within the Ebira dialect. Various diminutive and augmentative morphemes, including "-oweiyi," "-kiki," and "-obanyi," are identified, and their frequencies, semantics, and distribution across different sentence types are scrutinized. The findings illuminate that diminutive forms primarily serve to express endearment and smallness, while augmentative forms emphasize magnification, intensity, or derogation.
