DIALECT VARIATION IN YORUBA: THE CASE STUDY OF IJESHA AND STANDARD YORUBA

ABSTRACT

This research work is on Dialect Variation in Yoruba; the case study of Ijesha and standard Yoruba. The work was carried out using Lexicostatistics analysis approach with the view of finding out the linguistics links of standard Yoruba and ijesha dialect. The work set out to investigate the relationship between the two languages, by carrying out a test on the degree of mutual intelligibility to that exists between the Languages The reason for this research is to analyze the relationship between Standard Yoruba and Ijesha dialect. This study has helped to capture the obtainable differences and similarities in the lexical items of these languages through the lexicostatiscal formula put forward by Morris Swadesh (1955).
