ABSTRACT
It is a given that the educational sector in Nigeria is in urgent need of corrective surgery. Different problems and causes have been identified together with solutions over the years. This study argues that the major problems can be likened to those the American Philosopher, John Dewey, associated with the traditionalist approach to education such as rote memorization, stifling of creativity, lack of practicality and progression, and so on. This study further argues that a full implementation of Dewey’s pragmatic educational theory will very much change the ugly trajectory of Nigeria’s educational system. This study concludes that a pragmatic and progressive educational philosophy will equip the youths with the tools to navigate the modern world and in turn strengthen the country’s democracy.
