ABSTRACT
This research is a semantic analysis of Kinship terminologies in Yorùbá using Osogbo as a case study. The focus of this study is to examine what kinship terms are in osogbo and how these terms are used in osogbo community. In carrying out this study, the researcher collected the primary data through interview and direct observation methods of data collection. In collection of the secondary data, the researcher consulted texts on the language. The data collected were afterwards subjected to adequate research using the descriptive method of data analysis and the frame semantics theory. Analyzing this data, the researcher stated that there are three types of families: elementary, compound and extended families. The aims and objectives of this study includes examining the various kinship terminologies of osogbo with the aim of having a better understanding of the nature of the language. The findings of this research include that there are affine kin, consanguine, collateral, cognatic, unilineal and lineal kin relationships. It was established in this research that culture has a big role to play as long as kinship terms in osogbo is concerned. This research revealed that in some cases, the kinship terms of address may vary from those used in reference. This research recommends that studies be done in other aspects of the language as this will help the language gain more usage among the people especially the younger generation. It is our believe that an improved use of the language will help the use of osogbo kinship terms among the people who at the moment give preference to the use of English and Nigerian pidgin kinship terms.
