DEVELOPMENT OF FEED GRADES USING SWEET POTATOE (Ipomoea batatas) (L)Lam LEAF BAGASSE AND TUBER PEEL

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to develop feed grades using sweet potato leaf bagasse and tuber peel. The proximate composition, mineral composition,were determined in sweet potato tuber peel, leaf bagasse and the developed feed. The sweet potato leaves used for the research was obtained from a Garden in Ugbowo and the peels from the tubers were obtained from the potato tubers bought from a local market in Ugbowo,Benin City. The result of the analysis showed that dry matter ranged from 90.30 to 89.95%, crude protein (15.69%, 5.89%), crude fibre (15.877% ,4.827%) , Ether Extract (4.883%, 4.280%), Ash (8.083%,6.180%) and NFE (56.46%, 78.82%). Each grade of the feed had the following macro nutrient respectively: Sodium (15.19mg/g , 28.17mg/g), Calcium (606.2mg/g, 1118.9mg/g) , Potassium (1312.5mg/100g,3333.89mg/g), Magnesium (116.0mg/g, 265.2mg/g) , phosphorus (208.0mg/g, 320.3mg/g). The micro nutrient include: Manganese (5.17mg/g, 47.18mg/g), Zn (5.20mg/g), 8.08mg/g), Iron (16.82mg/g, 127.62mg/g). The data derived from the analysis of sweet potato leaf bagasse and tuber peel shows that it can be used as feed for livestock. Sweet potato tubers are readily available, nevertheless the peels are required in larger quantity. The bagasse can be used for livestock feeding.
