ABSTRACT

2-Dimensional Electrical Resistivity Imaging survey of seven profiles each of length 180m was carried out to determine aquifer attributes and characteristics within the Secondary School Area of University of Benin, Edo State. Dipole-dipole array was used for the field data collection using ABEM Terrameter SAS 300C Resistivity Meter. The field data’s were inverted and processed using DIPPRO™ 4.0 inversion software to obtain 2-Dimensional apparent resistivity of the subsurface. Geological interpretation of the resistivity images shows that sand aquifer most likely existed in traverse-5 and traverse-6.

The study reveals that at a depth of about 50m for traverse-5 and 30m for traverse-6 consist of wet sand which is suspected to be the groundwater potential zone within the study area. The aquifer is intercalated with clay unit at different horizon, implying that the aquifer has a suitable thickness. Variations in their resistivity and depths occurred due to the nature of the subsurface rock and mode of deposition.

The study area may hold good prospect for underground water in view of the probable thick aquifer layer.
