ABSTRACT
Fluoride is an essential additive in the formation of toothpaste as it helps in the prevention of dental carier. It is usually available in two major forms which are; Sodium Fluoride and Sodium monofluorophosphate at different concentration ranging from 0.2 – 1.1% depending on the manufacturer and its intended users. Fluoride has a narrow therapeutic index as its consumption (either accidental or intentional) above the recommended daily dose over a period of time leads to skeletal and dental fluorosis of which children are more susceptible. Therefore, it is essential that the fluoride content of toothpaste be analyzed quantitatively to ensure the safety of individual and the population at large.
This work, therefore provides information about the quantitative analysis of fluoride content of toothpaste brands obtained in New Benin Market, Benin City using indirect titrimetric method involving EDTA and lanthanum nitrate and Zinc metal as the titrant. Results obtained showed that seven out of the ten toothpaste brands (A,D,E,F,H,I and J) met the BP specific action of 90 – 110% while the remaining three toothpaste brands (B,C and G) failed to meet the BP specification range as they all fell above the specific range. The result therefore shows that some toothpaste brands available in the Nigeria market commercially are higher than their specified labeled strength, hence, the regulatory bodies need to strengthen their effort in the quality control to their percentage labeled strength keeping in minds.
