ABSTRACT
This project was set to assess the mineral composition of fresh and old leaves of Soursop (Annona muricata) harvested from Benin City metropolis. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer was used in assessing the following minerals; Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe), Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni), Potassium (K), Sodium (Na) and Manganese (Mn). The result indicated that the mineral constituent varies in compositions from various areas accessed. The results also revealed that the fresh and old leaves of soursop (Annona muricata) contain Zinc, Iron, Calcium, Magnesium, Copper, Potassium, Sodium and Manganese. Lead and Nickel was absent in both fresh and old leaves of soursop. The values gotten were compared among various locations sampled. It appears that the results varied from one site to the other. The statistical analysis conducted on the results revealed that significant differences existed between the elements of the fresh and old leaves and when the leaves were compared. From the results it can be concluded that the fresh and old leaves of soursop (Annona muricata) has different levels of elements and the different locations sampled also has different levels of element. The fresh leaves of Annona muricata contain Zinc, Copper, iron and potassium in higher concentrations and the old leaves contains Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium and Manganese in higher concentrations.
