ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the cyanide content of garri obtained from different vendor in local markets within Benin City. Garri samples were purchased from Newbenin market, Oba market, Oliya market, and Ekiuwa market in Benin City, Edo State. The samples were collected into sterile sampling containers and were transported to the laboratory for further analysis. The results shows that the highest cyanide content of garri samples was obtained in Oba market (75.33µg/ml), compared to Newbenin market (47.19µg/ml). However, the value of cyanide was also higher in Oliya market (56.09µg/ml) compared to Ekiuwa market (35.90µg/ml). The variation in cyanide levels for the garri product among different vendor may probably be a factor of differences in processing techniques for each garri sample. This study suggest that relevant government agencies should mount aggressive campaign to sensitize and educate the peasant farmers and cassava millers on the dangers of taking poorly processed garri and the diseases associated with intake of high cyanide concentrated garri.
