ABSTRACT

The condition of Oxidative stress is a dangerous experience that can greatly cause harm to several systems in the body. Several measures have been experimented to provide solutions to this problem. This study seeks to determine the anti-oxidative effect of Turmeric in cadmiuminduced oxidative stress in Wistar rats. A total of 30 adult Wistar rats were used for this study. Five rats were assigned to six groups. The control was administered normal feed and water, Group 1 was administered 10mg/kg of Cadmium chloride. Group 2 was administered 10mg/kg of cadmium chloride and 100mg of Turmeric extract. Group 3 was administered 10mg/kg of cadmium chloride and 200mg of Turmeric extract. Group 4 was administered 10mg/kg of cadmium chloride and 400mg of Turmeric extract. Group 5 was administered 10mg/kg of cadmium chloride for half of the study’s duration and left to recover. All administrations were done for twenty-eight (28) days, then the animals were sacrificed and serum superoxide dismutase, catalase and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined using spectrophotometric method. Data were compared using analysis of variance (ANOVA). MDA levels among Group 2 (0.117±0.001), Group 3(0.104±0.001) and Group 4(0.097±0.001) were significantly lower compared to the Group1 (0.225± 0.007) and control group (0.099±0.001). Serum SOD activity of group 1 was significantly decreased (0.180±0.074), but increased in group 2(0.239±0.007), peaked in group 3 (0.593±0.010) and group 4 (0.470±0.015) and then lower in group 5 (0.242±0.006) when compared with controls (p<0.05). Similarly, catalase activity was significantly decreased (p<0.001) in group 1(3.34±1.04), increased in group 2 (9.89±1.40), group 3 (5.70±1.56), group 4 (5.70±1.59) and group 5(6.58±2.72) when compared with controls (5.24±1.53). The maximum antioxidative effect of turmeric appears to be 100mg and 200mg/kg body weight. Tumeric was able to ameliorate oxidative stress in cadmium-induced oxidative stress in Wistar rats.
