ABSTRACT
Abattoir is a place where animals are slaughtered for the purpose of meat production which is supplied to human consumption. The abattoir environment generates several wastes which when not properly managed can result in water and air pollution. Vibrio spp. is and organism usually implicated in diseases associated with food and water contamination. Water samples were collected from different points in an abattoir located at Ewan road, IkpobaOkha Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The water samples were analysed for physiochemical properties and screened for the presence of V. parahaemolyticus using cultural, morphological and biochemical protocols. The isolated bacteria were also investigated for antibiotics susceptibility using the Kirby-Bauer method. The pH values observed range from 4.30±0.3 - 7.60±0.5. The temperature values observed range from 25.8±0.9 - 26.0±1.20C. The salinity values observed range from 0±0 - 0.08±0.1%. The mean total heterotrophic bacterial counts of the water samples demonstrated the highest value in final effluent – downstream samples while the least was observed final rinse water samples. The occurrence of V. parahaemolyticus based on cultural and biochemical characterization 12/15 (80%). The highest mean counts of V. parahaemolyticus were observed in waste water drain – upstream samples while there was no growth observed in source water samples. The resistance profile of V. parahaemolyticus was shown to have demonstrated the highest resistance towards ampicillin and ceftazidime with a resistance rate of 100%. No resistance was observed towards gentamicin. The multiple antibiotics resistance (MAR) index of V. parahaemolyticus in this study ranged from 0.8 – 0.4. The occurrence and prevalence of V. parahaemolyticus is of public health importance, hence, more studies involving the waste water effluent from animal and food processing plants need to be investigated.
