ABSTRACT

The current study has investigated the physicochemical characteristics of water and the antibiotic resistance of Enterococcus species found in Benin City, Nigeria's Ewa Road Abattoir. The occurrence of high multiple antibiotic resistance indices in Enterococcus species is crucial for public health as these could be spread by horizontal gene transfer between humans and animals as well as the environment. The results of this study could be used as a baseline study to examine outbreaks of multidrug resistant and pathogenic enterococci infections in abattoir settings. Using this information can assist Nigerian slaughterhouses build efficient monitoring and infection control procedures.
