Abstract
Several of advanced technological approach have been investigated, developed and tested in recent times in order to improve the efficiency and power output of Internal Combustion (IC) vehicle engine. However, in this project work, MATLAB 2018b was used in simulating a four stroke internal combustion engine and a six stroke engine to examine their efficiencies and power outputs. A detailed flow port analysis was carried out using ANSYS software and a valve lift of 8mm. The velocity magnitude and mass flow rate were monitored using swirl and cut planes. A SOLIDWORKS motion analysis was carried out using SOLIDWORKS 2017. The linear displacement, force reaction and angular velocity of the six stroke IC Engine was calculated based on the forces calculated from MATLAB simulations. The force diagram was modelled using segmented forces. The results show that the modelling done with MATLAB was close to the result obtained from the experiment, the peak pressure obtained from the MATLAB simulation was equal while that obtained from the experiment was less. Also, the six stroke engine simulation done with MATLAB shows that there is a considerable increase in the power output and efficiency when compared with four stroke engines. The efficiency of the four stroke engine was 36.6% while that of the six stroke engine was 51.2%. At the end of the simulation, it was found that the average angular velocity of the crankshaft was found to be 1315rpm, with percentage deviation of less than 20%. It was also found that the area-weighted average velocity of charge was 11m/s and the mass flow rate was 0.005479kg/s. This result shows great conformity with calculated results
