ABSTRACT
The Nigerian poultry system has become as one of the fastest growing sectors in agriculture because of its consistencycy and ease of practice. However, Nigerian poultry farming is facing many obstacles like higher feed cost, more labour intensive, non-remunerative price of poultry products, and lack of disease control facilities. Therefore, innovations and advancement in the technologies are the need of the hour so that high productivity can be achieved in a sustainable and non-blocking way. This demands the incorporation of various events of automation inside the poultry house with the aim that manipulation of environmental variables (air temperature, relative humidity, light, air speed and air quality-ammonia and carbon dioxide concentration) can be done remotely. The integration of smart technologies such as Internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), smart sensors, precision poultry farming etc. with the current course of poultry farming techniques may help in achieving higher out-turn. This review presents the various models for smart farming and the current status of poultry industry in Nigeria.
