ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to develop a speed detection system for vehicles on highways using micro-controllers and speed sensors. The system is designed to alert drivers when they exceed the speed limit and includes a button to set the maximum speed allowed on the highway. The increasing number of accidents caused by reckless driving on highways has resulted in loss of life, making it necessary to address these issues through electronic circuits that can notify drivers of their speed and keep them in check. This project focuses on detecting over-speeding vehicles and will be useful for highway traffic police as it provides a digital display of a vehicle's speed and sounds an alarm if the vehicle exceeds the specified limit. The project was implemented using an Atmega 328 microprocessor and two IR sensors placed distance apart. The system designed was able to measure the speed of the motor placed between the IR sensors and the value displayed on the LCD screen, with an alarm when certain speed is exceeded.
