ABSTRACT

This study presents the design and construction of an innovative Automatic Changeover Switch (ACOS) with a phase selector to address the growing demand for a dependable power supply system, particularly in regions with frequent power outages. The ACOS integrates power sources from the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), an inverter, and a generator to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply for residential and smallscale commercial users. Controlled by a microcontroller, the ACOS offers real-time monitoring and prioritizes power sources in the following order: BEDC supply, inverter, and generator. It also incorporates a phase selector for users to switch between single-phase and three-phase power supply based on their specific needs. The design process involves a thorough analysis of power sources, load requirements, and user preferences to guide component selection and control logic development. Key components include relays, contactors, a microcontroller, sensors, and a user interface panel, with safety features like overload protection and short-circuit detection. The ACOS represents a significant advancement in power management, offering an automated solution to mitigate the inconvenience of frequent power interruptions. Its adaptability to single-phase and threephase power makes it suitable for various applications, from residential homes to small businesses.
