ABSTRACT
Functional category are Universal Phenomenon. Crowgey (2012:8,11) asserts that Functional Categories tend to serve as ‘Introducers’ of Phrases, they often modify heads, they are the glue that holds a sentence together and make it Grammatical. A number of works have been done on the syntactic analysis of Functional Categories in Edo. However few exist works existing Functional Categories in the language. This research thus aim at examining the Functional Categories in the Edo language.
This Research made use of the primary and secondary methods of data collection. Data where elicited from six native speakers through the interview method for the primary data, while data were sourced from written work in Edo for secondary data. This research adopted the descriptive framework for the analysis of data.
The research found out amongst others that Adjectives are of three types in Edo which are inherent, derived and ideophonic Adjectives. It also made it clear that classes of Adverbs are more than the classes of Adjectives in the Edo language and that both Functional categories have semantic value in Edo clause because they modify the information of the verbs or the noun.
