ABSTRACT
Depression is classified as a mental health disorder marked by lack of adornment and a diminished inclination from pleasure or activities. It has various causes including genetics, environmental, psychological causes and stress. Treatment of depression includes use of psychotherapy and anti-depression medications. The aim of this study is to determine the antidepressant effect of datura stramonium. Phytochemistry and acute toxicity studies were carried out using standard procedures. This research explores the antidepressant effects of the methanol extract of Datura Stramonium on depressant models (tail suspension test and forced swimming test) induced in Swiss mice. Results from the phytochemical study showed the presence of saponins, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, eugenols, phenolics, tannins, terpenoids and alkaloids. Acute toxicity test reveal that the extract was safe at 400 mg/kg with no record of death or visible toxic effect. Studies conducted on induced depressant in Swiss mice produced similar effects to the standard drug (Amitriptyline). This research suggests potential antidepressant-like effect of the methanol extract of Datura Stramonium seeds which maybe due to the active phytochemicals present in the extract.
