DEEP FIBRE IN WIRELESS NETWORK DENSIFICATION AND BROADBAND QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The exponential growth of internet traffic added to the rising demand for large bandwidth consuming services and applications all over the world has triggered an increasing need for higher capacity in core optical communication networks. This has broadened the landscape for fibre broadband utilization. Consequently, more fibre optic infrastructure are needed across network edges to satisfy the burgeoning global appetite for broadband access and high-speed data. In an effort to accommodate the needs of future connected world, network service providers have embarked on intensive drive to densify and add more capacity to their networks.

The influence of deep fibre in wireless network densification and broadband Quality of Experience, QoE, in Nigeria was thus investigated using blast radius methodology. It employed availability evaluation model through the broadband supply chain to deduce the impact analysis or blast radius on a network occasioned by fibre failure at both the upstream and downstream segments of broadband supply chain. The availability profile of both segments was analyzed to ascertain the weakest link towards end-to-end connectivity for end-user QoE.

Results show that the upstream segment of broadband supply chain calculated at 99.04% availability for West African Cable System (WACS) is consistent with defined service level availability threshold for the service, in Nigeria. However, the availability profile of frontier downstream fibre links in Nigeria at 96.80% is poor and unstable. Cellular densification increases with cumulative length of fibre deployed on the network thus ensuring more capacity, just as network key performance indices rise and fall with fibre link availability. Hence, fibre links availability across the elements of broadband supply chain is the pathway for wireless network densification and broadband QoE in Nigeria.
