ABSTRACT

Brillantaisia  P. Beav. is a genus within the family Acanthaceae. The study investigates the cellular structures, stomatal development, and pollen morphology of Brillantaisia P. Beav. to gain insights into its taxonomy, evolutionary relationships, and reproductive biology. The genus is known for its ornamental value and potential medicinal properties. They are used by traditionally by traditional birth attendants, especially by the Benin-speaking people of Edo State, in treating stomach problems relating to female fertility problems, toothache, infections and some other illnesses; thus, it is commonly grown in their groves (home gardens) surrounding their homes. Cytological and morphological studies were carried out on collected four (4) species. The collected Leaf samples were, measured and prepared for stomata studies. The pollen samples were also collected from mature anthers and examined under a light microscope. The results revealed that chromosomes were diffused and scattered during meiosis and mitosis when observed under the microscope. The leaves of the Brillantaisia species showed differences in structure, size and shape, Brillantaisia bauchiensis had the biggest leaf size, followed by B. owariensi, while B.lamium had the smallest leaf size colour from dark green to light green. The cytological and morphological study of the four species has helped provide insights into the plant's reproduction.
