ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study, titled “a critical review of Ẹdo orthography from 1900 till date,” is the Ẹdo orthography systems and phonetic representations that have been proposed used, rejected and accepted over the years. The need for a consistent, an accurate and an all encompassing orthography for Ẹdo language is one of the primary objectives of this work. To this end, the different orthographies are reviewed chronologically and critically.

Chapter one introduces us to the language of study, its linguistic classification, its extent of speech and its speakers.

Chapter two reviews some concepts that are relevant to the work. Some previous works are also reviewed and we are introduced to the content of this work.

Chapter three discusses the theoretical framework that is adopted in the course of the work.

Chapter four chronologically and critically reviews the different orthographies and the proponents of these orthographies and their contributions to the development of Ẹdo language.

Chapter five summarizes the entire work and finally recommends a correct representation of Edo sounds orthographically and phonetically.
