ABSTRACT

Common vegetables such as Scent Leaf (Ocimum gratissimum), Bitter Leaf (Vernonia amygdalina), Water Leaf (Talinum triangulare), African Rosewood Leaves (Pterocarpus mildraedii) are crucial to the life of man and other living organisms. Man relies on them as a source of food and medicine. This enormous pressure makes these vegetables endangered and proper care must be taken to prevent these species from disappearing from the globe totally (extinction).

Interestingly, these vegetables have received fertilizer trials in the past owing to their importance in the diet of human beings. This research was conducted in the Department of Soil Science and Land Management, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin in 2024. This research highlights some ways that could be followed to conserve the endangered species from total extinction. Some of the conservational approaches include proper irrigation; planting more of these vegetables regularly, avoid bush burning as these vegetables can be burnt in the process, creating awareness to the general public about the usefulness of these vegetables and how they can be conserved.

The importance of planting these vegetables cannot be underestimated as they have both traditional and medical health benefits such as the source of vitamins and minerals, they contain fiber, they all contain low calorie and low fat content, and these vegetables also protect against cancer, indigestion and maintain good health.
