ABSTRACT

The study was undertaken to find out the ef ects of motivation on performance in the civil service: A case study of the Ministry of Education, Benin City, Edo State. The main objectives of the study is to examine the key motivational tools and strategies used in motivating civil servants and the ef ect of these motivational tools on performance. The research design used for this study is exploratory field research. During the exploratory research, relevant of icial document were accessed, collected and systematically analyzed. Data were collected from primary sources through questionnaire and was supplemented with secondary data. Data collected were analyzed through the use of simple percentages and tabular presentation. The findings of this research indicated that there is a relationship between motivation and performance of civil servants. Also the study revealed that poor motivation lead to poor performance; civil servants prefer increase in salary than other forms of motivation and that poor performance lead to organizational failure. The recommendations from the finding was that, government should continuously review the salaries of civil servant so as to motivate them to put in their best, appraisal should not be biased, rewards and good working environment should be in place for workers. Finally, this study will be of importance to government, human capital managers, policy makers and labour unions.
