Abstract
This study focuses on corruption and economic development in Nigeria: A case study of President Buhari’s anti-corruption policy. This study adopted the survey design on the bases of which questionnaire was used as instrument of data collection. The study adopted a sample of one hundred and fifty (150). The data was analysed using percentage and chi-square statistical techniques. The result shows that there is relationship between anti-corruption policy and the actual fight against corruption that could impact on economic development in Nigeria. There is relationship between the level of government transparency and openness in the fight against corruption and degree of economic development in Nigeria. There is relationship between the instrumentalities of President Buhari’s anti-corruption policy that facilitate public sector accountability that could promote economic development in Nigeria. There is relationship between the elimination of corruption and public official’s responsiveness to the needs and interests of the people thereby enhancing socioeconomic development. The study recommends that Buhari’s administration should practice an evenhanded and transparent prosecution of corrupt individuals in politics as this can build Nigerian’s confidence in the accountability of their elected officials and strengthen the democratic institutions. There should be good governance that will strengthen the transparent and effective use of public and donor resources and encourage increased investment and growth in Nigeria. There should be an overhauling of the police and regular investigation of police corruption will help reduce corruption in the other areas effectively.
