ABSTRACT
The project titled Correlation Analysis of Index Properties of Laterite Soil with Okhoro as a case study seeks to understand the relationships between key index properties of laterite soils, particularly Moisture Content, Specific Gravity, and Particle Size Distribution. These properties are critical in determining the engineering behavior of laterite soils, which are widely used in construction projects across tropical regions. The moisture content of each soil sample was determined by the oven-drying method, while specific gravity was obtained using a pycnometer, as prescribed by relevant soil testing standards. A total of 14 soil samples were collected and tested. The Average Moisture Content of the samples ranged from 5.72% to 14.78%, while the Specific Gravity values ranged from 2.09 to 2.55. The data was then compiled into a table format, which was analyzed using statistical methods to explore potential correlations between the properties. In addition to moisture content and specific gravity, Particle Size Distribution data were also collected for each sample through sieve analysis. Although particle size distribution was not the primary focus of this study, it was recognized as an important factor that could be explored in future research. A regression analysis was conducted to further quantify the relationship between these two variables. The resulting R-squared value of 0.0222 indicated that only 2.22% of the variance in moisture content could be explained by specific gravity. This low R-squared value highlights that specific gravity alone does not significantly impact or predict moisture content in laterite soil.
