CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGERIAN BANKING INDUSTRY

ABSTRACT

The study empirically examine the relationship between corporate governance and banking industry performance in Nigeria for the period 1981 to 2020 (40 years). Four corporate governance indicators/related factors (audit committee (AUDC), ownership concentration (OWCON), CEO accountability (CEOACC) and Board independent (BIND)) were regressed against banks performance variable. The panel least square (PLS) method was used to analyze the data, and the empirical findings revealed that audit committee has significant negative relationship with banking industry Performance in Nigeria. On the other hand, ownership concentration and board independent have significant positive impact on banking industry Performance; and while CEO accountability does not play significant role in the performance of the Nigerian banking industry within the period of investigation. The study recommends among others that, policy makers in the country should focus more attention on this all important variable (audit committee) by initiating appropriate policy that will continue to strengthen audit committee adherence by companies in the country. This will help in enhancing banking industry overall performance in Nigeria.
