ABSTRACT

This research endeavour sought to investigate the phenomenon of corporate distress and its impact on the performance of quoted deposit money banks operating within the confines of Nigeria Exchange Limited (NGL). The primary aims of this research endeavour were to establish the correlation between non-performing loans and the operational efficiency of deposit money banks in Nigeria, evaluate the impact of capital adequacy ratio on the overall performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria, analyse the influence of loans and advances on the operational effectiveness of deposit money banks in Nigeria, and determine the association between total bad debt and the performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. The research design employed in this study was grounded in an ex-post facto experimental research design. The data utilised in this study were obtained from the Statistical Bulletins published by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The study's findings unveiled that the panel regression analysis demonstrated a noteworthy and positive association between capital adequacy and the performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Additionally, the analysis revealed a significant and negative relationship between non-performing loans and the performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Furthermore, the analysis indicated a positive but insignificant relationship between loans and advances and the performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Lastly, the analysis showcased a significant and negative relationship between total bad debts and the performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria.
