ABSTRACT

The impact of cooperative societies in Nigeria has been profoundly positive, especially regarding poverty reduction, rural economic development, and the economic empowerment of low-income earners. Through various mechanisms such as microcredit provision, agricultural cooperatives, educational and training programs, and savings and loan schemes, cooperatives have become instrumental in fostering sustainable development. Firstly, the provision of microcredit by cooperative societies has been a critical tool in alleviating poverty. By offering small loans to individuals who typically lack access to traditional banking services, cooperatives enable these individuals to start or expand small businesses, thus generating income and improving their livelihoods. Studies show that microcredit increases household income and consumption, reduces poverty levels, and enhances overall economic stability. This financial inclusion also leads to improved health and education outcomes, as families can afford better healthcare and schooling.
