ABSTRACT

This study examined contract staffing and employee engagement in the oil and gas industry. The study administered questionnaire to contract staffs of Escravos, Otumara, Saghara, Tunu, Opukushi, Benesede and Ogbotobe flow stations of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) West, respectively using a simple random sampling technique. The study employed descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and Stepwise regression for the empirical analysis.

The empirical results showed that contract staffing has a negative influence on employee engagement, employee commitment and organisatinal citizenship, but was not significantly influenced by employee motivation..

In view of these, the study recommended that training and development program for both contract and permanent staff in the same line of responsibility should be structured in such a way that their categorization does not influence the training content and package in order to create room for genuine organisational citizenship behavior. Besides, organisedlabour leaders and employers in the industry in Nigeria should ensure that contract staffing in the industry is reduced to the barest minimum.
