ABSTRACT
This work examines the special effect translation and the process of translation euphemisms in Edo. The aim however is an attempt to explain the hierarchical relationship at which translation equivalence may be achievable with the claim that the society can place more emphasis on the use of euphemistic expression wile a translator is translating from one language to another.
In order to achieve the goal of our research effort, an adequate analysis of this phenomenon, Uwajeh’s four levels performative transitory theory was adopted which consist of the lexical, literal, free, and the figurative level respectively. The method of data collection is both primary and secondary of which primary method was through direct utterances from native speakers. The secondary method entails carefully selected literatures about special effect translation from both Edo and English language. The work is divided into five chapters.
In chapter one, the work entails a general introduction of work and present the background to the which consist of three parts: introduction, the language and the people, the purpose of study, significance of study and general methodology. Chapter two focuses on the review of relevant literature which is organized into basic parts; conceptual, previous studies and the concise for the present day. Chapter three was centered on the thematically frame work adopted for the study which is the performative 5 level translation of Uwajeh (1994) which explains the levels to which a text is translated from source language to target language. Chapter four presents the analysis of the work as well as the data presented. Chapter five which is the last chapter present the summary of the work done, the conclusion as the recommendation which is followed by the references.
