ABSTRACT
This study investigates the context sensitivity of Edo proverbs. For the analysis, the study adopts the contextual theory approach by Roger Abraham in the 20th Century. The research adopts a mixed method of data collection i.e. both the primary and secondary methods of data collection. The primary method involved personal interview with the native speakers of the Edo language. Data were garnered from informants who are very competent and deeply grinded in the Edo language. The validity of the data collected where done by subsequent question-and-answer section carried out with competent older speakers. The secondary method of data collection will involve the use of useful study materials. Both hard and soft copies textbooks and majorly online materials and PDFs. This research in discoveries, brings to light how the meaning of a proverb can differ in respect to the context that the proverb is being used. This research projects the Edo proverb as an integral part in the Edo communication system. The research validates the functionality of Edo proverbs in correcting evil vices, revealing the truth and serving as an advice to those in need of it.
